BBC television idents began in the early 1950s, when BBC first showed there logo between adverts/breaks to identify the service and make the channel well known. As new technology has become available, these devices have evolved from simple still black and white images to the sophisticated full colour short films seen today.
This was the first ident to be shown on BBC. You can see the difference in the changes of the adverts as technology has changed.
The first ident, "Television Symbol", or the "Bat's Wings" (1953–1960)

The circle idents were introduced on October 7, 2006
